> How to pick Google Business Profile categories in 2026: primary vs additional, Google's limits, Bing and Apple matching, plus the AI answer angle.

---

TL;DR

- Pick one primary category that says what your business is, as specifically as Google allows.
- Add additional categories only for real, core lines of work, and put everything else in services.
- Keep the same category idea on Google, Bing Places and Apple, and match your website headline to it.
- Edit sparingly, since Google may ask you to verify again, and never put keywords in your business name.

## What are Google Business Profile categories?

Google Business Profile categories are one primary category plus optional additional categories that tell Google what your business is. Google's bulk upload help says [you can add up to 9 additional categories](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3370250). More is not better: a wrong or loose category can cost relevance, and editing categories may send your profile back through verification.

**Bottom line**

- Pick the most specific primary category if Google offers one that matches what your business is as a whole.
- Add additional categories if a second line of work is a real, core part of the business that people search for on its own.
- Skip changing your categories unless the business actually changed, a better-fitting category appeared, or the current one is plainly wrong.

Want a quick self-check first? Run my free [12-point listing score](/audit/) in your browser. One of the 12 questions is whether your primary category matches the real work.

Here is why this matters more now. Some customers may ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode things like "best emergency plumber near me" or "who does roof repair in Kansas City." Your category is one of the plainest facts about what you are. It shows on your Google listing. Bing Places and Apple Business each have their own category field too.

So my approach is simple. Pick categories that say exactly what you do. Keep the same idea across Google, Bing and Apple. Back it up with matching services and website wording. None of that guarantees a ranking or an AI mention. It removes one reason to get skipped.

**Want a second pair of eyes on your category?**

My free Google Listing Check compares your listing with 5 nearby listings and sends you one clear next step. It is a snapshot of what customers see, not a promise about where Google will show you.

**Who this is for:** local businesses doing roughly $1.5M to $20M a year that need to hold their place in the Google map pack. Smaller operators can stop here: our plans are built for that range. Most of what competitors bundle is activity, not outcomes. You are paying for the result, not the receipt.

## Key facts

- Google allows [up to 9 additional categories](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3370250) on top of your primary one.
- Picking "Golf Resort" makes Google [imply 3 broader categories](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177), so skip redundant ones.
- Chain locations must share the [1 category](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) that best represents the business.
- Apple Business allows [1 primary plus up to 19 optional categories](https://support.apple.com/guide/business/configure-location-attributes-abcbdc543423/web) (help published April 14, 2026).
- Google's [AI features page](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) (updated December 10, 2025) lists no extra requirements for AI Overviews.

## What a Google Business Profile category is, and what it is not

A category is a label you pick from Google's own list. [You can't create your own](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669). Google's developer docs describe the primary category as the one that [best describes the core business](https://developers.google.com/my-business/reference/rest/v4/accounts.locations). Here is what it is not.

- **Not keywords in your name.** [Google's guidelines](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) bar service words in the name and warn it can lead to suspension.
- **Not your services or products.** Those go in the services list, where you can be detailed.
- **Not attributes.** Wheelchair access or free Wi-Fi describe what you have, not what you are.
- **Not your description.** That is free text in your own words.
- **Not a schema.org type.** That is code on your website, a separate thing you control there.
- **Not your Bing or Apple category.** Those are separate fields on separate platforms, with their own lists.

## Our data: what 18 category guides from a search snapshot tell you (checked October 28, 2026)

On October 28, 2026 I ran three US searches: "google business profile categories," "best google business profile categories" and "how to choose google business profile categories." I kept the distinct article pages and dropped Google's own help pages, forums and videos. That left 18 pages. This is a snapshot of public guides in search results on that date, not a test of any AI assistant.

I opened 3 in full and judged the other 15 from title and search snippet only. If I could not see something, I counted it as no. So the snippet-judged pages may undercount. I counted "cites Google's help" only when a page linked or cited a Google help page while talking about choosing categories. This is a small, one-day sample, not a study of the whole web.

| Check | Pages |
| --- | --- |
| Explains primary vs additional categories | 13 of 18 |
| States a specific limit on how many categories you can add | 9 of 18 |
| Links or cites Google's own Business Profile help on categories | 6 of 18 |
| Mentions categories on Bing Places or Apple (Apple Business Connect / Apple Maps) | 0 of 18 |
| Mentions AI (AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini or other assistants) | 2 of 18 |

Download the 18 rows behind this table: [our-data-2026-10-28.csv](/google-business-profile-categories/our-data-2026-10-28.csv) (URL and yes/no for each check).

Most guides explain primary vs additional, but only half print a limit and only a third point back to Google's own help. As far as I could see, none of the 18 mentioned categories on Bing Places or Apple, and only 2 mentioned AI answers. For the limit itself, go to the source: [Google's bulk upload help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3370250) says 9 additional.

## How AI answers use what your listing says

Start with what Google actually documents. Its [AI features guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says there are no additional requirements to appear in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations needed. Among the SEO basics it says still apply, it lists checking that your Business Profile information is up to date. It also says both features may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one answer.

On the listing side, Google's category help says [the categories you select affect your local ranking](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669) on Google. Google's bulk upload help adds that the Maps icon shown for your business depends on the category you set. Google does not say a category guarantees an AI mention. I won't either.

Apple is similar. Apple says the place card [appears across Maps, Siri, Calendar, Messages and more](https://support.apple.com/guide/business/configure-location-attributes-abcbdc543423/web). It also says categories help customers find your location with an icon in Apple Maps, and that categories are updated regularly.

Then there are ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. In my October 28 check, I did not find a help page from any of them that spells out which business listing sources they read for local questions. So I treat this as a risk to check, not a fact. If an assistant pulls from the web and finds your Google category, your Bing category and your website headline saying three different things, it may describe you wrong or name someone whose details are clearer.

My short checklist:

- Same category idea on Google, Bing Places and Apple Business.
- A services list that matches your categories.
- A website headline that says the same thing in plain words.
- No keyword stuffing in the business name.
- Check the answer yourself. My free [AI Recommendation Test](/ai-recommendation-test/) asks your one money question 3 times each on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode and writes down what each answer says. No placement is promised.

More on lining up your details: [make your business details match everywhere AI reads](/updates/match-business-details-for-ai-assistants/).

## How to choose and set your categories, step by step

### 1. Write one sentence about what you are, then pick the most specific primary category

Finish this sentence: "This business is a \_\_\_." Google's guidelines use the same test, ["IS a" rather than "HAS a"](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177). Write what you are, not what you sell. Then type it into the category box and take the most specific match Google offers. Google's own example: choose "Nail salon" instead of "Salon." If nothing specific fits, [Google says to pick a general category](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669).

*Time:* 15 minutes.

*Done when:* you have one sentence and one primary category that matches it.

### 2. Look at what the top 3 nearby map results use

Search your main service the way a customer would, on your phone, from where you work. Open the top 3 map results. Write down the category label shown on each public listing. Only write down what you can actually see. Don't guess at anything else.

Use this as a reality check, not a copy job. If all three use a more specific category that truly describes you, consider it. If they use something you are not, ignore it.

*Time:* 20 minutes.

*Done when:* you have 3 business names and their visible categories on paper.

### 3. Add only additional categories that describe real core services

Google's example is a grocery store with a bakery and deli: [primary "Grocery store," additional "Bakery" and "Deli."](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669) Each one is a real department. Google also says to skip broader categories that a specific one already covers, and not to add categories for a separate business inside yours ([guidelines](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177)).

My test: would a stranger call you that, and is it a real part of your work? If yes, it can be a category. If no, it is a service.

*Time:* 15 minutes.

*Done when:* every additional category passes the "this business is a" test.

### 4. Make the edit in your Business Profile and expect a possible review

Google's steps: go to your Business Profile, select Edit profile, select Edit next to "Business category," set the primary category, use "Add another category" for the rest, then Save ([Google help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669)). Google warns that adding or editing a category may mean you are asked to verify your business again. Make the change when you have time to answer a verification request. Don't stack edits back to back.

*Time:* 10 minutes for the edit. Google's category help does not give a time for any review that follows.

*Done when:* the categories show as saved and any verification request is finished.

### 5. Fill in services so they match the categories

Categories say what you are. Services say what you do. Add the services that sit under each category, in the words customers use. Then check your homepage headline says the same thing. Here is how I handle that field: [fill in your Google Business Profile services](/updates/fill-in-google-business-profile-services/).

*Time:* 30 minutes.

*Done when:* every category has matching services, and your website headline names the same trade.

### 6. Mirror the category on Bing Places and Apple Business

Apple asks you to [select one and only one primary category](https://support.apple.com/guide/business/configure-location-attributes-abcbdc543423/web), as specific as possible, plus up to 19 optional ones. Apple also says its categories were updated recently and asks you to check that yours are still accurate. See my notes on [claiming your Apple Maps place card](/updates/claim-apple-maps-place-card-siri/).

Bing Places has its own category list. Bing's help says you can select [up to 10 categories: 1 primary and up to 9 additional](https://www.bing.com/forbusiness/help/editYourListing). Pick the closest match to the same idea you used on Google. More on setup: [Bing Places](/bing-places/).

*Time:* about 30 minutes per platform once the listing is claimed.

*Done when:* Google, Bing and Apple all say the same thing about what you are.

### 7. Re-check every few months and after list updates

Google and Apple each maintain their own category lists, and Apple says its categories are updated regularly. Google also says it [can detect category information from your website](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) and from mentions across the web. Put a reminder on your calendar every three months. Look at your categories on all three platforms and confirm nothing changed without you.

*Time:* 10 minutes per quarter.

*Done when:* all three platforms still match your one-sentence description.

## Example category sets for three Kansas City-style businesses

These are examples, not recommendations for your business. I could not confirm every exact category name from a Google source, so I describe the categories here instead of printing names. Type the trade into your own dashboard and pick what Google offers before you save, because the list changes.

| Business | Primary / additional |
| --- | --- |
| A plumber that also does water heaters | Primary: the plain plumber category. Additional: a drain service category if drain work is a real core line, plus a water heater category only if Google shows one for you. |
| A dentist with cosmetic work | Primary: the general dentist category. Additional: a cosmetic dentistry category, and a teeth whitening category only if whitening is a real core line. |
| A personal injury law firm | Primary: the personal injury attorney category Google offers. Additional: a trial attorney category, only if the firm actually tries cases. |

Each label here describes the idea; the exact wording is whatever Google shows in your dashboard. Notice what is missing too: no broad lawyer category next to the personal injury one. Google says you can skip categories that a more specific one already covers.

## Mistakes that cost the most

### Mistake 1: Keywords in the business name (cost: the whole listing, for as long as a suspension lasts)

Something like "Smith Plumbing Kansas City Emergency Plumber" in the name field. [Google's guidelines](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) say unnecessary information in the name isn't permitted and could result in suspension. The category already does that job, within the rules. If it has already happened, start here: [Google Business Profile suspended](/google-business-profile-suspended/).

**Fix:** use your real-world name and let the category name the trade.

### Mistake 2: Swapping the primary category often (cost: time lost to re-verification you can't schedule)

It can be tempting to switch the primary category with the seasons. Each switch is an edit, and [Google says category edits may trigger a new verification request](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669). Google's category help does not say how long that takes, so you can't plan around it.

**Fix:** pick the category that is true all year, and put seasonal work in services and posts.

### Mistake 3: Filling every slot with loose categories

Google says to use [as few categories as possible](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) and not to use categories solely as keywords. A list of loose categories muddies what you are. If you pay someone to clean it up, my onboarding audit is $5,000 to $10,000 one time, waived on 12-month terms (see [pricing](/pricing/)) and covers categories, hours, service area and more. Doing it yourself costs an afternoon.

**Fix:** cut every category that fails the "this business is a" test.

## One precise category vs a few precise categories vs many loose categories vs keywords in the name

| Approach | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| One precise category | Matches [Google's advice](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669) to choose specific ("Nail salon," not "Salon"). Clear, but may miss a real second line of work. |
| A few precise categories | Google's own grocery, bakery and deli example ([help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669)). Fits when each one is a real part of the business. |
| Many loose categories | Against [Google's guidelines](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177): use as few as possible, never solely as keywords. Blurs what you are. |
| Keywords in the business name | Not permitted, and [Google says](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) it could result in suspension. The worst trade on this list. |

## How we compared the options

| Criterion (weight) | What it measures |
| --- | --- |
| Fits Google's rules (35%) | How closely the approach follows Google's category and name guidelines. |
| Matches what customers search (25%) | Whether the categories line up with the plain words buyers use. |
| Consistency across platforms (20%) | Whether the same idea carries over to Bing Places, Apple and your website. |
| Risk of review or suspension (20%) | How likely it is to trigger edits, re-verification or suspension. Higher score means lower risk. |

Disclosure: Kansas City SEO Services sets categories as part of its onboarding audit (see [pricing](/pricing/)), so judge these scores with that in mind. There are no affiliate links on this page.

**A few precise categories**: Best for businesses with a real second line of work. Score: 8.8/10 (my judgment, weighted: rules 9, search match 9, consistency 9, risk 8). Trade-off: each extra category is one more thing to keep true on three platforms.

**One precise category**: Best for single-focus shops. Score: 8.6/10 (my judgment, weighted: rules 10, search match 6, consistency 9, risk 9). Trade-off: you may not show for a real secondary service.

**Many loose categories**: Best for nobody. Score: 3.7/10 (my judgment, weighted: rules 3, search match 5, consistency 3, risk 4). Trade-off: more labels, less clarity about what you are.

**Keywords in the name**: Best for nobody. Score: 1.4/10 (my judgment, weighted: rules 0, search match 4, consistency 2, risk 0). Trade-off: a short-term label for a suspension risk.

| If you are ... | Start with / watch out for |
| --- | --- |
| A home service contractor | Start with the trade you are, such as the plumbing, HVAC or roofing category Google offers. Watch out for turning every task into a category. |
| A service-area business with no storefront | The same category rules apply. Watch out: [Google says service-area businesses should hide](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) their business address from customers. |
| A dentist or medical practice | Start with the general dentist category or your specialty. Watch out: [practitioners can have their own profiles](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177), so plan categories to avoid clashing. |
| A law firm | Start with the practice area you are known for. Watch out for a broad category stacked on top of a specific one. |
| A restaurant | Start with cuisine or format. Watch out: for no dine-in, [Google uses](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) "Pizza delivery," not "Delivery restaurant." |
| A multi-location business | Start with one shared category. Watch out: [Google requires](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) the same category across locations offering the same service. |

For the full listing setup beyond categories, see my [Google Business Profile](/google-business-profile/) service page.

## Who this is not for

- **Online-only stores.** [Google's guidelines](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) limit Business Profiles to businesses with a location customers can visit or that travel to customers. Put your effort into your website instead.
- **A suspended profile.** Categories are not your problem yet. Get reinstated first, starting with [what to do when your profile is suspended](/google-business-profile-suspended/).
- **Large chains editing dozens of locations.** One-by-one edits don't scale. Google's [bulk upload spreadsheet](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3370250) fits better. For a few Kansas City locations, ask about Enterprise through [contact](/contact/).

## Frequently asked questions

### How many categories can I add to my Google Business Profile?

One primary category plus up to 9 additional ones. Google's bulk upload help says [additional categories are optional and you can add up to 9](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3370250). Google also says to use as few as possible, so 9 is a ceiling, not a goal.

### Can I change my Google Business Profile category?

Yes, from Edit profile, then Business category. [Google warns](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669) that adding or editing a category may mean you're asked to verify again. Change it when the business changed, not on a whim.

### Does changing my category hurt my ranking?

It can move things either way, and nobody can promise which. Google says [the categories you select affect your local ranking](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669). That is exactly why you should only switch to a category that describes you better.

### Why did Google change my category without asking?

Google's help doesn't list every reason. Its guidelines do say it [can detect category information from your website](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) and from mentions across the web. If your site and other listings describe you differently from your profile, fix those so they all match. Then set the category back in your profile.

### What category should a plumber use on Google?

Usually the plain plumber category Google offers, as the primary category. Add a drain service category only if drain work is a real core part of the business. Everything else, like faucet repair, belongs in services.

### Can I make up my own category if mine isn't listed?

No. [Google says you can't create your own](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669) and should pick a general category instead. Then use your services and description to explain the specifics.

### Do Google categories help me show up in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No one can promise that. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, [Google says](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) there are no extra requirements and lists keeping Business Profile info up to date as a best practice. For ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, check the answers yourself with the [AI Recommendation Test](/ai-recommendation-test/).

## What changed in this guide

- 2026-10: First published. Checked Google's category help, guidelines and bulk upload help (up to 9 additional categories), Google Search Central's AI features page, Apple Business category help (1 primary, up to 19 optional) and Bing Places help (1 primary plus up to 9 additional, 10 total). Ran the 18-page Our data check on October 28, 2026. Example categories are described rather than named where I could not confirm the exact name from a Google source.
