Google Business Profile suspended? How to get it back in 2026

Do not make a new profile. Read the reason, fix it, gather documents that match your listing, and file one appeal. Every step links to Google's help pages or the guide I took it from.

If your Google Business Profile is suspended, the fix is an appeal, not a fresh listing. Google's help page lays out the order: make the profile follow the guidelines, add documents that match it, then submit one appeal in the appeals tool (Google help). This guide covers which kind of suspension you have, the common causes, the documents Kansas City businesses can pull, and what to do after a denial. I sell listing recovery, so I say where you can do it yourself.

Key takeaways

  • Do not create a new profile. Google's help page says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business. Fix and appeal the one you have.
  • Read the reason before you touch anything. The appeals tool shows the decision date, the reason, a link to the policy and whether it can be appealed. Fix that first, because Google says an appeal can only be submitted once.
  • Evidence should match the profile. Google calls evidence optional but says it can strengthen an appeal. It lists business registration, a business license, tax certificates and utility bills, with the same name and address as the listing. In Kansas City that can mean a Missouri or Kansas Secretary of State record and, inside KCMO, a city business license.
  • A restricted Google account comes first. If Google restricted your account, the profiles you manage are suspended and you cannot create or claim new ones. Appeal the account on your My accounts page first, then each profile.
  • Google publishes no timeline. A community guide on Google's Business Profile Help forum says 3 to 7 business days in general, and Thryv's help center says 1 to 5 weeks. Do not edit the profile or file again while you wait.

What a suspended Google Business Profile is (and what it is not)

A suspension means Google decided that a Business Profile, or the Google Account that manages it, breaks its guidelines. Google says it may suspend or disable profiles that do not follow them, and that you can appeal if you believe the profile should be reinstated (Google help). While a profile is removed, the public cannot open it and the owner and managers cannot act on it. A community guide on Google's Business Profile Help forum adds that a suspended profile drops out of both Search and Maps (community guide).

What got removed matters. Google's help page separates three cases (Google help):

  • The profile. Appeal the profile. If Google reinstates it, the profile and its owner and managers come back.
  • The owner's Google Account. Every location that user owns is removed. Reinstating the account brings the locations back.
  • A manager's Google Account. That manager is suspended on the profiles they manage. The locations themselves are not affected.

What it is not: a ranking drop. If your listing still shows on Maps and you can still manage it, you are most likely not suspended. Slipping in the map pack is a visibility problem with a different fix, covered on the map pack page.

For scale: Google says that in 2025 it removed over 13 million fake Business Profiles and placed posting restrictions on more than 782,000 policy-violating accounts (Google blog, April 16, 2026). The appeal is how a real business shows it is not one of them.

First, figure out which kind of suspension you have

Match what you see to a row. The first move differs by row.

Why Google suspends profiles, and what to change

These are causes named in Google's guidelines, its community guide and Thryv's help center. Fix the one the appeals tool points to, then check the rest so the appeal is clean.

CauseWhat to changeSource
Keywords, city names or taglines in the business nameUse the real-world name on your signs, website and stationery. Google says extra information in the name can get a profile suspendedGuidelines
A virtual office, rented mailbox or P.O. box as the addressUse the real location. Virtual offices are not eligible. A co-working office counts only with clear signage, staff and customers during business hoursGuidelines
A service-area business showing a home addressClear the address and set a service area. Google's own example is a plumber who runs the business from homeGuidelines
Two profiles for one business or locationKeep one profile per location. Without a storefront you get one service-area profileGuidelines, community guide
Several listings with overlapping service areasKeep one service area per real location. Google says a service area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based, with some exceptionsCommunity guide, guidelines

How to appeal a suspended Google Business Profile, step by step

This follows Google's current appeals tool (Google help). Older guides talk about a "reinstatement form." Google now uses the appeals tool, which Sterling Sky reported reaching US businesses in December 2023 (Sterling Sky).

  1. Do not create a new profile. Google's help page flags this as important (Google help).
  2. Open the appeals tool while signed in to the Google Account tied to the profile. Pick the profile and the decision. Write down the date, the reason, the policy link and whether it is eligible for appeal.
  3. Fix the profile before you appeal. Change whatever the policy link points to, then check the cause table above. Google says an appeal can only be submitted once, so do not file with the problem still live. One wrinkle: Google says owners and managers cannot act on a removed profile, while Thryv says owners can still make edits (Thryv). If you cannot edit, say in the appeal what you would change.
  4. Gather your evidence. Google calls evidence optional but says it can strengthen an appeal. It lists business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills for electricity, phone, water or internet. Google's tip: check that the business name and address on each document match the profile. The Kansas City sources are in the next section.
  5. Write a short, factual explanation. Say what was wrong and what you changed. The community guide says you get about 1,000 characters and that complaints about lost business do not help (community guide).
  6. Attach the files and submit. On Google's current help page you choose files before you click Submit appeal. The community guide and Sterling Sky both describe a 60-minute window to upload documents (community guide, Sterling Sky). Either way, have every file ready before you start.
  7. Stop editing. Thryv's help center warns that new edits while the appeal is open delay the review (Thryv).
  8. Check the status. The appeals tool shows Submitted, Approved, Not Approved, Can't be appealed or Eligible for appeal. Google also emails the decision.
  9. If it is denied, ask for an additional review. Google says that only if a request is denied, it may be able to do an additional review, and you can add evidence that was not in the first appeal (Google help, additional review form).

Managing more than 10 suspended profiles? The tool asks if you are requesting bulk reinstatement for 10 or more locations. Say yes and attach a spreadsheet with each Business Profile ID and its documents (Google help).

Evidence a Kansas City business can pull today

Google names the document types. Here is where a business on either side of State Line gets them.

DocumentWhere to get itWatch for
Business registration (Missouri)Missouri Secretary of State business searchIf your profile uses a trade name, include the Registration of Fictitious Name too. KCMO's license office asks for it as well (KCMO)
Business registration (Kansas)Kansas Secretary of State business search, for Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, KCK and the rest of the Kansas sideKansas does not file sole proprietorships or DBAs, so pair a trade name with a license or utility bill that shows it (Kansas SOS)
Business license (Kansas City, MO)KCMO Business License Office. The city says every business operating in KCMO needs one, with exceptions such as certain state-licensed professionals (KCMO FAQ)Licenses are valid until December 31, so send the current year's (KCMO FAQ)
Tax documentsYour state or city tax records. Inside KCMO, the Business License Office issues tax clearance letters that confirm compliance with city taxes (KCMO)Google lists tax certificates. Check that the name and address match the profile (Google help)
Utility billElectricity, phone, water or internet for the business location (Google help)Same name and address as the profile, not a home bill in a different name
Certificate of insuranceYour insurerListed as accepted in the community guide (community guide)
Signage photosYour storefrontGoogle expects businesses that show an address to keep permanent fixed signage (guidelines). Stellar Active and OMG National suggest storefront and signage photos (Stellar, OMG). Google's help page lists documents, so send photos in addition, not instead

How long reinstatement takes

No source gives a guaranteed time. Here is what each one says.

SourceWhat it says
Google help pageNo timeline. Google reviews the appeal and emails the decision
Community guide on Google's help forum (Oct 29, 2024)3 to 7 business days in general, not a hard rule; it can depend on the number of submitted appeals
Thryv help center (March 18, 2026)Typically 1 to 5 weeks, longer when there is a backlog
Stellar ActiveMost requests take less than two weeks

What not to do while you wait

  • Do not create a second profile for the same business (Google help).
  • Do not file a second appeal on the same decision. Google allows one, and Thryv says duplicates lengthen the wait (Thryv).
  • Do not keep editing the profile until Google decides.
  • Do not pay anyone who promises reinstatement. Google makes the call.

How to keep it from happening again

  • Keep the name exactly as it reads on your sign and paperwork.
  • One profile per location. Service-area businesses hide the home address.
  • Keep your Secretary of State record and city license current. The community guide lists accurate state business records as a prevention step (community guide).
  • Avoid changing name, address, category and phone all at once (Thryv).
  • Keep the business owner as primary owner and give helpers manager access, which cannot remove the owner (Google help). More on that in GBP management vs DIY.

How I put this together

On 2026-10-18 I read Google's help pages on suspended profiles, business guidelines, owners and managers, and getting started; Google's April 2026 Maps safety post; the community guide on suspended profiles in Google's Business Profile Help forum; Thryv's help center; Sterling Sky; the City of Kansas City, Missouri business license pages; and the Missouri and Kansas Secretary of State business searches. I also read the top-ranking articles for this search, from Stellar Active, Thryv and OMG National. Each claim links to the page it came from; nothing here is marked as tested. I have no client results yet, so there are none on this page, and I do not promise reinstatement or a timeline.

Where I fit

I sell this work. The Listing Fix is $795 one time. It includes claiming or recovering a Google Business Profile. It also covers categories, hours, service area, description, photos, Bing Places and core directories. For a suspension, I find what broke the guidelines, fix what can be fixed with you, and put the evidence together. The owner signs in and submits the appeal, and Google makes the decision. If you can fix it yourself in ten minutes, I will tell you that.

FAQ

How do I find out why my Google Business Profile was suspended?

Open the appeals tool while signed in to the Google Account tied to the profile. It shows the decision date, the reason, a link to the policy and whether you can appeal (Google help).

How long does it take to get a suspended profile reinstated?

Google publishes no timeline. A community guide on Google's Business Profile Help forum says 3 to 7 business days in general, and Thryv's help center says 1 to 5 weeks (community guide, Thryv).

Can I create a new Business Profile instead of appealing?

No. Google's help page says not to create a new profile for the same business, and its guidelines allow one profile per location (Google help, guidelines).

What documents does Google accept for a reinstatement appeal?

Evidence is optional, but Google says it can strengthen an appeal. It lists official business registration, a business license, tax certificates and utility bills such as electricity, phone, water or internet. Check that the name and address on each match the profile (Google help).

What happens if my appeal is denied?

Google says that only if a request is denied, it may be able to do an additional review. You can add evidence that was not in the first appeal (Google help, additional review form).

What if every profile in my account was suspended at once?

Check for an account restriction. Google says a restricted account has its profiles suspended and cannot create or claim profiles. Appeal the account on your My accounts page, then appeal each profile once the restriction lifts. If the owner's Google Account was removed, every location it owns is removed too (Google help).

Can an agency file the appeal for me?

Google's help page says the owner and managers can ask Google to reinstate a profile (Google help). Thryv's help center says Google only accepts requests from the owner (Thryv). The safe plan is for the owner to sign in and submit. Someone can prepare the fixes and evidence with you.

How much does it cost to fix a suspended Google Business Profile?

Google lets you manage a Business Profile at no charge, and its appeal page lists no fee (Google help, appeals help). If you want help, my Listing Fix is $795 one time and includes recovering the profile (pricing).

The free Map Pack Check normally compares your listing with the top three nearby. A suspended listing is not on the map, so the check works differently. Paste the reason from Google's email into the form. I reply with what I would fix first and what to gather. No charge and no retainer. If it is a ten-minute fix you can do yourself, I will say so.
