Describe the photos on your website in plain words

A job photo says nothing in text until you describe it, so give each website photo plain alt text and a short descriptive file name.

AI assistants can only describe your business using what is public on your pages. A photo of a finished job says nothing in text until you describe it. A plain description is one more clear public statement of what you do. No one can promise it gets you placed or mentioned in an AI answer.

What Google says

Google's image SEO best practices page says Google pulls information about an image from the page, including captions and image titles. It calls alt text, the text that describes an image, the most important attribute for image metadata. It also says alt text helps people who use screen readers or have low-bandwidth connections. A filename gives Google "very light clues," so use short descriptive names. Google's example: my-new-black-kitten.jpg is better than IMG00023.JPG. Google also warns that filling alt attributes with keywords may cause your site to be seen as spam.

Five steps

  1. List the photos on your main pages: job photos, team, storefront.
  2. Give each one a short, plain description of what is actually in the photo.
  3. Rename files like IMG00023.JPG to short descriptive names before upload.
  4. Keep each photo next to the text it belongs with.
  5. Do not stuff keywords or city names into every alt attribute.
