What Google says about showing up in AI Overviews

Google publishes guidance for site owners on AI Overviews and AI Mode, and most of it is the same Search basics a local business already needs.

Google has a Search Central page for site owners called AI features and your website. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. I read it so I could tell owners plainly what it says.

What Google says

To show as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements. It also says specific optimization is not required, and the usual SEO basics still apply.

The basics Google lists include:

  • Let Google crawl your pages.
  • Link your pages to each other so content is easy to find.
  • Give visitors a good page experience.
  • Put important content in text form.
  • Make structured data match the visible text on the page.
  • Keep your Business Profile information up to date.

What that means for a Kansas City shop

Put what customers ask about in plain text on your site: your services, the area you serve, your hours, and how to reach you. Do not leave those only inside a photo, a flyer image, or a PDF. Then keep your Google Business Profile current.

Nobody can promise what an AI answer will show, and I will not.
