Set your Google service area to where you really work

Your Google Business Profile service area should list the places you actually work, and Google's help page explains how to set it.

Your service area tells people where you work. Google says setting it helps people find your Business Profile.

What Google's help page says

  • A service-area business visits or delivers to customers and does not serve them at its business address. If that is you, Google says to remove your address from the profile.
  • A hybrid business can show its storefront address and also have a service area.
  • You can have up to 20 service areas, set by city, postal code or another type of area. You can't set a radius.
  • If approved, edits may take up to 48 hours to show.

Why it matters for AI answers

AI assistants can only describe where you work from the details you publish. A service area with the real cities you serve gives people, and anything reading your listing, the same picture as your website. It is no promise of any placement, and no promise that an AI answer will mention you.

What I would do in Kansas City

  1. List the cities you actually drive to.
  2. Drop any place you would not take a job in.
  3. Make your website's areas page say the same thing.
