What do AI SEO services actually include, and are they worth paying for?

AI SEO services are paid work that makes a business easy for AI assistants and Google's AI features to find, read and describe correctly. Google says AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users. The trade-off: no provider controls those answers, so you are buying cleaner inputs and honest tracking, not placements.

Bottom line

  • Pick a do-it-yourself fix if you have one location, a clean Google listing and someone who can edit robots.txt and your pages.
  • Pick a managed service if you run several locations, compete in a crowded category, or your details differ across Google, Bing and directories.
  • Skip it unless the provider tells you in writing exactly what they will change, how they will measure it, and that they cannot promise AI mentions.

If you want to see what assistants say about you today before you spend anything, I run a free AI Recommendation Test by hand on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. If you need the basics of why a business goes missing in search first, read why your business is not showing up on Google. This page is for buyers who are ready to hire.

Key facts

What AI SEO is, and what it is not

AI SEO (also sold as generative engine optimization, GEO, or LLM SEO) is search engine optimization aimed at answers written by generative artificial intelligence: chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. For a local business it overlaps heavily with local search work, because assistants answering "who should I call" can draw on the same listings, reviews and pages Google Maps uses.

It is not "SEO done by AI." Software that writes blog posts automatically is a content tool, not an AI visibility service. It is also not a paid ad slot, and it is not a ranking you can buy. It does not replace regular SEO either. It is the same groundwork, checked against a new set of readers that quote you instead of listing ten blue links.

Our data: what 29 AI SEO provider and pricing pages promise (checked November 1, 2026)

Prices as of 2026.

Method. This is a snapshot taken on November 1, 2026. I ran three Google searches (ai seo services, ai seo agency, ai seo pricing) and logged every distinct provider or article page, not counting the three page-1 articles this guide competes with. I skipped one syndicated press release. That left 29 pages. I opened 7 in full and judged the other 22 from the text Google showed in results. Anything I could not see counted as "no" or "not stated." A "guarantee" means wording that says the provider will put, get or keep you in AI answers, not wording about improving your chances. Limit: snippets show only part of a page, so the "yes" counts for those 22 are probably low.

What it means for you. Only 4 of 29 pages mentioned the Google Business Profile or local listings, which are the records behind Google's map results, so most of this market is not built for local businesses. 14 of 29 publish no price, and 6 used wording that implies placement nobody can deliver. Ask every provider for a written price, a written measurement plan, and a source for every statistic they quote.

What AI SEO services include

Strip away the labels and a real service covers eight work items. If a proposal skips most of these, it is a content package with a new name.

Work itemWhat it is and why AI answers depend on it
Crawler access in robots.txtAllow OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. A blocked search bot cannot read your pages, so its assistant cannot cite them.
Google Business Profile accuracyCategories, hours, services, service area and description. This is the record behind map results and many local AI answers.
Bing Places accuracyA matching Microsoft listing, so the second big search index carries the same facts about you.
Matching name, address and phoneIdentical details across directories. Conflicting records give assistants two versions of you to choose from.
Structured dataSchema.org markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ) that repeats what the visible page says. It helps machines label facts; it is not a shortcut.
Answer-first pagesService pages that answer the buyer's question in the first lines: what you do, where, for whom, and roughly what it costs.
ReviewsA steady request and reply routine. Assistants summarize what customers say, good and bad.
Tracking AI answersAsking the same buyer questions on a schedule and recording who gets named, with screenshots, plus the Search Console AI report.

A minimal robots.txt block that lets the four search crawlers in looks like this. Your web person should merge it with your existing rules, not paste over them.

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /

Training bots are a separate choice. OpenAI says each setting is independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot. For the listing side, see my pages on the Google Business Profile, Bing Places and local directories, and the note on matching business details for AI assistants.

How ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews find local businesses

ChatGPT uses OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in its search features. OpenAI says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. A separate agent, ChatGPT-User, visits pages when a user asks, and OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it.

Claude uses three separate agents: ClaudeBot for training, Claude-SearchBot for search and Claude-User to fetch pages when someone asks. Anthropic says blocking Claude-User means it cannot fetch your pages for user questions, which may reduce your visibility in user-directed search responses.

Perplexity says PerplexityBot exists to surface and link websites in its search results and is not used to train models.

Gemini and Google AI Overviews sit inside Google Search. Google's AI Mode runs on a custom version of Gemini and uses a "query fan-out" technique that splits one question into several searches. Google also added a Search Console toggle. Sites that opt out will not receive traffic or impressions from these features.

What to do: allow the search bots, keep that toggle on, make your listings match word for word, and put plain answers on your pages. Then check the answers by hand. None of this guarantees a mention.

What AI SEO costs in 2026

Prices in this market are all over the place because "AI SEO" covers everything from low-cost software to a full agency team. Here are the price models with figures I could check on the vendors' own pages on November 1, 2026. Agency names are given only to quote their own pages; the full page list is summarized in Our data above.

Price modelPublished prices (as listed on November 1, 2026)
Low-cost software or managed planRanked AI's home page lists plans from $99 a month, as listed on November 1, 2026. At this price, ask what people do and what software does.
One-time audit or strategy projectOptimist lists audits, strategy and roadmap projects starting at $2,500, as listed on November 1, 2026.
Strategy-only advising retainerOptimist lists ongoing AEO advising from $3,000 a month, focused on B2B SaaS, as listed on November 1, 2026.
Full-service agency retainerThrive publishes no price; its contact form's lowest monthly budget option is $2,500 to $5,000, ad spend excluded, as listed on November 1, 2026.
Listings-first retainer (Kansas City SEO Services)Growth $5,000 a month (6-month minimum), Authority $7,500 (12-month term, exit after month 6), Enterprise $10,000 (12-month term).
Onboarding audit (Kansas City SEO Services)$5,000 to $10,000 one time, waived on 12-month terms. Annual prepay is 10% off.
Performance bonus (Kansas City SEO Services)Authority and Enterprise only: capped at 10 to 15% of that quarter's base fee, paid only when agreed KPIs are hit.

Two things move the price more than the "AI" label: how many locations need clean listings, and who does the implementation. A provider that only advises is cheaper, but your team does the work. Questions to ask before you hire an AI SEO company

  1. What exactly will you change in the first 30 days? Want a list: robots.txt, profile fields, directory fixes, specific pages. Not "strategy."
  2. Which assistants do you check, and how? Ask to see a sample report with the exact questions asked, the date, and screenshots.
  3. Do you promise mentions, citations or a top spot? The right answer is no. Google controls local results and each assistant controls its answers.
  4. Do you work on my Google Business Profile and Bing Places? For a local business, a "no" means they are skipping the main records.
  5. Who owns the listings and logins if we part ways? You should. Get it in the contract.
  6. Where do your statistics come from? Ask for the primary source of any number in the pitch. In my check, only 2 of 29 pages cited one.
  7. What is the minimum term and the exit? Get the notice period and any audit fee in writing.
  8. Do you work with my direct competitor? I take one business per category per map area. Ask every provider their policy.

How to hire an AI SEO service, step by step

1. Record a baseline before you talk to anyone

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the questions your buyers ask ("best emergency plumber near Overland Park," "personal injury lawyer in Kansas City"). Screenshot every answer. Or request my free AI Recommendation Test and the free Map Pack Check.

Time: about an hour by hand.

Done when: you have dated screenshots showing who gets named and what is said about you.

2. Fix crawler access and the Search Console setting yourself

Have your web person check robots.txt for the four search bots and confirm your site is included in Google's generative AI features in Search Console. This costs nothing and no provider should bill much for it.

Time: under an hour of work, then about 24 hours for OpenAI and up to 24 hours for Perplexity to reflect changes.

Done when: robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot, and the Search Console setting is on.

3. Write a one-page scope

List your locations, categories, service areas, and the five to ten buyer questions that matter most. Note which listings you control and which you have lost access to. Use the local SEO checklist as a starting point.

Time: one afternoon.

Done when: any provider could quote from that page without a discovery call.

4. Shortlist three providers and send the same questions

Send each the scope and the hiring questions above. Compare written answers side by side. Drop anyone who promises placement or will not publish a price.

Time: one to two weeks for replies.

Done when: you have three written proposals with prices, terms and a sample report.

5. Read the contract for term, exit and ownership

Check the minimum term, notice period, onboarding fees, bonus terms, and who owns every listing and login. Make sure no performance clause pays for "AI mentions" the provider cannot control.

Time: an hour, more if a lawyer reviews it.

Done when: term, exit, fees and ownership are written in plain language you can repeat back.

6. Set a 90-day review with agreed measures

Agree on what gets reported: listing fixes completed, directory matches, pages updated, review counts, Search Console AI impressions, and the same buyer questions re-asked by hand. Compare against your step 1 baseline.

Time: 30 minutes to set up, one meeting at day 90.

Done when: the review date and the measures are on the calendar and in the contract.

Mistakes that cost the most

Blocking the search bots by accident (about 24 hours of lost ChatGPT search visibility per fix)

Many sites block "all AI bots" with one rule and take out the search crawlers along with the training crawlers. OpenAI says opted-out sites are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and even after a fix, changes take about 24 hours to apply. Fix: list each bot by name and allow the search ones.

Leaving Google's AI features toggle off (100% of that traffic)

Google says sites that opt out of its generative AI features will not receive traffic or impressions from them. That is all of it, no matter how good your pages are. Fix: check the setting in Search Console before paying anyone.

Signing a long term on a guarantee ($60,000 at $5,000 a month for 12 months)

Six of the 29 pages I checked used wording that implies placement. A 12-month term at a $5,000 monthly retainer commits you to $60,000 (12 x $5,000). For scale, $5,000 is the Growth price on my pricing page, and Growth carries a 6-month minimum, not 12. If the deal rests on a promise nobody controls, you are paying for the promise. Fix: buy defined work items and an exit clause, never a guaranteed outcome.

DIY vs software vs agencies vs Kansas City SEO Services

OptionWhat you get, what it costs, the catch
Do it yourselfRobots.txt, Search Console, listings and pages fixed in-house. Costs staff time. Catch: listing cleanup across directories is slow and easy to abandon.
Software subscription onlyTracking dashboards or content tools; prices vary by vendor. Catch: tools report the problem but do not fix your listings or pages.
Strategy consultancyAudit and advice. Optimist lists projects from $2,500 and advising from $3,000 a month (its own page, as listed on November 1, 2026). Catch: your team implements; it states it is not for local businesses.
Full-service national agencyContent, technical, links, PR. Thrive's lowest budget option is $2,500 to $5,000 a month (its own form, as listed on November 1, 2026). Catch: no published price; local listings may be one line item.
Kansas City SEO ServicesProfile, Bing Places, directories, pages, AI-visibility tracking. Growth $5,000 a month, 6-month minimum. Catch: higher entry price; one business per category per map area.

How we compared the options

Criterion (weight)What it measures
Listing and local data accuracy (30%)Whether the option fixes the Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directory details assistants read.
Crawler and site coverage (20%)Whether robots.txt, structured data and answer-first pages get handled.
Honest measurement (20%)Dated, repeatable answer checks and no placement promises.
Cost and contract risk (15%)Published price, minimum term and exit terms. A higher rating means lower cost and risk.
Effort required from you (15%)How much of the work lands on your own staff. A higher rating means less work for you.

Disclosure: Kansas City SEO Services sells one of these options (Growth starts at $5,000 a month). There are no affiliate links on this page. Outside prices are as listed on November 1, 2026. Scores below are my judgment: each criterion is rated 0 to 10, multiplied by its weight and added up. I rated my own option low on cost because it costs more to start.

Do it yourself: Best for single-location owners with a clean listing and a capable web person. Ratings: listings 6, site 7, measurement 4, cost 9, effort 3. Score: 5.8/10 (my judgment from the weights). Trade-off: cheapest, but measurement and directory cleanup usually slip.

Software subscription only: Best for in-house teams that already do the fixes and need tracking. Ratings: listings 2, site 4, measurement 7, cost 8, effort 4. Score: 4.6/10 (my judgment from the weights). Trade-off: shows answers, changes nothing on its own.

Strategy consultancy: Best for B2B or national brands with an in-house team to implement. Ratings: listings 3, site 7, measurement 7, cost 6, effort 4. Score: 5.2/10 (my judgment from the weights). Trade-off: good plans, but local listings are rarely in scope.

Full-service national agency: Best for brands wanting content, links and PR under one contract. Ratings: listings 5, site 8, measurement 4, cost 4, effort 8. Score: 5.7/10 (my judgment from the weights). Trade-off: broad scope, unpublished prices, local work may be thin.

Kansas City SEO Services: Best for established local and multi-location service businesses. Ratings: listings 9, site 7, measurement 8, cost 4, effort 8. Score: 7.5/10 (my judgment from the weights; I sell this). Trade-off: $5,000 a month entry and a 6-month minimum.

Which option fits you

If you are ...Start with / watch out for
A single-location contractor with a verified, accurate listingStart with DIY steps 1 and 2. Watch out for paying a retainer to fix robots.txt.
A clinic or home services group with several locationsStart with a listings-first service. Watch out for mismatched hours and phone numbers across locations.
A law firm in a crowded metro categoryStart with a managed retainer and written measures. Watch out for any promise of being "recommended."
A business with a marketing team but no listing accessStart by recovering the profile. Watch out for vendors who keep the logins.
A national B2B or e-commerce brandStart with a strategy consultancy or content agency. Watch out for local-only providers.

Who this is not for

  • Brand-new businesses with no verified listing or reviews yet. There is little for assistants to read. Better: verify the profile, collect reviews and follow the local SEO checklist first.
  • Owners who need calls this week. Listing and page work builds over months and nobody controls AI answers. Better: paid search, which I quote separately, plus ad spend.
  • National online-only brands. Map pack and local listing work is the wrong tool. Better: a content or B2B search specialist.

Frequently asked questions

What are AI SEO services?

They are paid work that makes your business easy for AI assistants and Google's AI features to find and describe correctly. The core is crawler access, accurate listings, matching business details, clear pages, reviews and answer tracking.

How much does AI SEO cost?

It ranges widely: in my November 1, 2026 check, the lowest monthly prices shown ran from $14 for a software tool to $3,000. What you pay depends mostly on how many locations need work and who does the implementation. My Growth plan is $5,000 a month.

Is there an AI that can do SEO?

AI tools can draft content, audit pages and track answers. They cannot verify your Google listing, recover lost logins or make directory records match, and those are what local AI answers depend on.

Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?

Evolving. Google's AI features sit inside Google Search, and ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity all run their own search crawlers. The groundwork of crawlable pages and accurate business data still decides what they can read.

Can an AI SEO company guarantee ChatGPT or Google AI mentions?

No. Each assistant controls its own answers and Google controls local results. Anyone who guarantees a mention is promising something they do not control.

What is the difference between AI SEO, GEO and LLM SEO?

Mostly marketing labels for the same work. Judge the proposal by its work items and measurement, not the acronym on it.

Should I block AI crawlers?

Block training bots if you want, but allow the search bots. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity each document separate search crawlers that read pages for their search answers.

How long until I see a difference?

Crawler changes take up to about a day to register with OpenAI and Perplexity. Listing cleanup, reviews and page changes build over months, so set a 90-day review against your baseline.

Start with a baseline, not a contract. Request the free Map Pack Check or book a call on the contact page, or call (816) 608-8581. I will record your listing next to nearby competitors and tell you what I would fix first. If a paid plan makes sense, the prices are on pricing and the process is on how it works. I cannot promise any placement or AI answer, and I will tell you that before you pay.

Think of the onboarding audit as the starting point that surfaces what is wrong on the listing. The monthly Growth plan is the part that keeps replies, posts, and photos current once it is fixed. If your business does $1.5M to $20M a year, that is the range we built this for.
