How do you get your business recommended by ChatGPT?
Learning how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT comes down to being easy to find, read and confirm: crawlable pages, matching listings and real reviews. OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to register with ChatGPT search. The trade-off: you control the inputs, never the answer.
Bottom line
- Pick do-it-yourself if you have one location, a few free hours a month and you are willing to keep a simple log.
- Pick hired help if you run several locations, work in a crowded category or have already tried for a few months on your own.
- Skip it for now if your Google Business Profile is not claimed and accurate. Fix that first.
If you want to see where you stand before changing anything, I run a free AI Recommendation Test. I ask money questions about your category on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode by hand and show you who gets named.

What getting recommended by ChatGPT is, and what it is not
Getting recommended by ChatGPT means your business shows up by name when someone asks the chatbot who to call for a job in your area. When a question would benefit from current information, ChatGPT can search the web and write a short answer with cited sources.
It is not a paid placement. OpenAI's developer site lists a separate Ads product, but I found nothing in its documentation that lets you submit or buy a spot inside the answer itself. It is not a separate discipline from search engine optimization, either. Google says its AI features use the same SEO foundations as regular Search. And it is not training the model on your business. That is a different crawler with a different purpose. The closest plain description: making your business easy for a search-connected chatbot to find, read and confirm, then checking what it says.
Our data: what 25 top guides cover (checked November 2, 2026)
Method. On November 2, 2026, I ran three Google searches: "how to get your business recommended by chatgpt", "how does chatgpt recommend local businesses" and "how to show up in chatgpt search". I kept 25 distinct article pages and skipped forums, a podcast page, a product download and an author archive. I opened 7 pages in full and judged 18 from their search snippets. Each page got a yes or no on six checks.
Limits. If something was not visible in the text I had, I counted it as no. That means snippet-judged pages probably undercount every row. The 4 snippet pages I later opened in full each gained at least one yes, which supports that. This is a snapshot from one day of results, not a study of what works.
| Check | Pages (N of M) |
|---|---|
| Cites OpenAI's own documentation | 5 of 25 |
| Mentions robots.txt or crawler access | 8 of 25 |
| Mentions Bing or Bing Places | 8 of 25 |
| Mentions Google Business Profile or local listings | 18 of 25 |
| Promises or implies guaranteed AI mentions | 1 of 25 |
| Sells its own AI visibility service or tool | 9 of 25 |
Download the 25 rows behind this table: our-data-2026-11-02.csv (each page checked, the URL, each yes/no, and whether we opened it in full).
What it means for you. Most guides tell you to fix your listings, and that advice holds up. Only 5 of 25 send you to OpenAI's own pages and only 8 mention Bing, even though OpenAI says ChatGPT search can use third-party providers such as Bing. Those two gaps are cheap to close yourself, so I built the steps below around them.
How ChatGPT finds and picks businesses
Here is what OpenAI actually documents. I left out anything I could not confirm on an OpenAI page.
| Signal | What OpenAI or the source says |
|---|---|
| Live web search | ChatGPT searches the web when a question would benefit from it and adds inline citations plus a Sources list (OpenAI Help). |
| Third-party search providers | ChatGPT may share disassociated search queries with third-party search providers such as Bing (OpenAI Help). |
| Searcher location | ChatGPT collects general location from the user's IP address and may share it with search providers (OpenAI Help). |
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI's crawler for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search. Opted-out sites are not shown in search answers, only as navigational links (OpenAI). |
| GPTBot | A separate training crawler. You can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot (OpenAI). |
| Maps data and reviews | The OpenAI pages I checked do not name a maps, listings or review provider for local answers. Treat any "single secret source" claim with caution. |
So the practical chain, in my reading rather than OpenAI's words, looks like this: someone asks, ChatGPT searches, a search provider returns pages and listings, and ChatGPT writes an answer from what it found. If your site is blocked, your Bing presence is thin, or your details conflict, you give it less to work with.
How ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews find you
ChatGPT searches the web when it helps, may send queries to third-party providers such as Bing, and uses OAI-SearchBot to surface sites in search answers.
Claude uses three robots. Anthropic says Claude-SearchBot indexes content to improve search results, and Claude-User fetches pages when a person asks Claude a question. Disabling either may reduce your visibility. ClaudeBot is for training.
Perplexity documents PerplexityBot as the crawler that surfaces and links websites in its search results.
Google AI Overviews (and AI Mode) follow regular Search rules. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. It also says to keep your Business Profile information up to date and make structured data match the visible text.
Gemini is not covered by name on that Google page. Google points owners to Googlebot rules for Search and to Google-Extended for AI training and grounding in some of its other systems. I did not find a Google page that explains how Gemini picks local businesses.
What to do: allow each search crawler, keep Google and Bing listings matching, and retest each assistant on its own. None of this guarantees a mention in any of them.
What you can control and what you cannot
| You can control | You cannot control |
|---|---|
| Whether search crawlers can reach your site | Which sources an assistant picks for a given prompt |
| Your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directory details | How the search provider ranks your page that day |
| The plain wording on your service and location pages | The asker's location, chat history and model version |
| How consistently you ask real customers for reviews | What customers write, and when |
| Structured data that matches what the page says | Whether an AI Overview shows at all for a query |
Spend your time on the left column. Anyone selling you the right column is selling something they do not own. Google says it plainly for local results: there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
How to check what ChatGPT says about you
Use the same prompts every time so you can compare month to month. Open a temporary chat if your account has one, so your history does not color the answer. Ask each prompt, then copy the businesses named and the sources listed into a spreadsheet with the date.
Who is the best [service] in [city], [state]?
I need [job] in [suburb]. Who should I call?
Which [service] companies near [neighborhood] have good reviews?
What do you know about [Business Name] in [city]?
What are [Business Name]'s hours and phone number?
Compare [Business Name] and [Competitor] for [job].
Run the same set in Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (watch for an AI Overview). Note three things: were you named, were your facts right, and which sites were cited. Cited sites you are missing from are your to-do list.
An honest warning: answers vary by session, location and model. ChatGPT uses general location from your IP, so a test from your office may differ from a customer's phone across town. One answer proves nothing. Look at the pattern over three or more months.
How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, step by step
1. Write down your baseline
Run the prompt set above in all five assistants. Save the answers, the businesses named and the cited sources. If you would rather have someone else do it by hand, the free AI Recommendation Test covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode.
Time: about 45 minutes.
Done when: you have a dated log showing who was named and which sites were cited for each prompt.
2. Let the search crawlers in
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Look for rules that block OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, PerplexityBot or Googlebot, including a blanket "Disallow: /" under "User-agent: *". Check your firewall, CDN or security plugin too. Google lists crawling allowed "by any CDN or hosting infrastructure" as a basic. If the file blocks them, rules like these open search access:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Claude-User
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
Blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot (training) is a separate choice. My walkthrough on checking robots.txt for AI search crawlers covers common hosts.
Time: 15 to 30 minutes, plus about 24 hours for OpenAI to pick up changes.
Done when: no search crawler is disallowed and your security tools are not challenging them.
3. Fix your Google Business Profile
Claim it, pick the most specific primary category, and fill in services, hours, service area, description and photos. Google says complete and detailed business info helps it match you to relevant searches, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Google's AI features guidance also tells owners to keep Business Profile information up to date. See my Google Business Profile page for the full field list.
Time: 1 to 2 hours the first time.
Done when: every field is filled and matches your website word for word.
4. Claim Bing Places and match your details everywhere
Because ChatGPT search can use third-party providers such as Bing, a missing or stale Bing Places listing is a gap you can close in an afternoon. Then line up the same name, address, phone, hours and categories on your core local directories. My update on matching business details for AI assistants has the field-by-field list, so I will not repeat it here.
Time: 2 to 4 hours for one location.
Done when: Google, Bing and your top directories show identical details, with no duplicates.
5. Put plain answers on your own pages
Give each main service its own page. Say what you do, where you do it and who it is for in the first lines. Add the questions customers ask on the phone: price ranges, timelines, service area, licenses. Keep important content in text, not only in images. If you use structured data, Google says it should match the visible text on the page. Google also says you do not need special AI text files or schema to appear in its AI features.
Time: 1 to 2 hours per service page.
Done when: a stranger could read any service page and answer what, where and roughly how much.
6. Earn real reviews and local mentions
Ask every satisfied customer, every time, with a direct link. Ask them to mention the job and the town in their own words. Reply to reviews. Look for honest local mentions: your chamber, trade associations, local news, suppliers. Never buy, fake or gate reviews. The FTC's final rule bans buying fake reviews and paying for reviews that express a particular sentiment.
Time: 15 minutes a week to send requests and reply.
Done when: asking for reviews is a routine step after every finished job.
7. Retest monthly and log changes
Rerun the same prompts on the same day each month. Add a column for what you changed that month. If a site keeps getting cited and you are not on it, that is next month's task. Pair this with my local SEO checklist so the basics do not slip.
Time: about 45 minutes a month.
Done when: you have three or more months of logs and can see a trend instead of one answer.
If you would rather hand this off, start with the free AI Recommendation Test, then compare plans on pricing and read how to choose a local SEO company in Kansas City before you sign with anyone, including me.
Mistakes that cost the most
1. Blocking OAI-SearchBot: excluded from 100% of ChatGPT search answers
OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, only as navigational links. That is every search answer, and the block can come from a security plugin or a blanket robots.txt rule nobody remembers adding. Fix: allow OAI-SearchBot, then allow about 24 hours before you retest.
2. Letting details drift: several days to several months to correct
Google says crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months, and that inaccurate info means your profile might not show up for relevant searches. An old phone number on one directory can linger long after you fix it. Fix: keep one master record and update every listing from it the same day.
3. Signing a retainer before testing: $30,000 committed
My own Growth plan is $5,000 a month with a 6-month minimum, so 6 times $5,000 is $30,000 before you can leave. Any retainer with a minimum term works the same way. If you sign before you know whether the problem is a blocked crawler or a messy listing, you may pay for months of work you did not need. Fix: run the free test and steps 1 and 2 first, then decide.
DIY vs. hiring help: the realistic options
| Option | What you get, what it costs, the catch |
|---|---|
| Do it yourself with this guide | You handle crawlers, listings, pages and reviews. Cost: your time. Catch: easy to stall after month one without a log. |
| Free AI Recommendation Test, then DIY | I run money questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode by hand. Cost: free. Catch: it is a snapshot, not a fix. No placement promised. |
| A general SEO or AI visibility agency | Scope and pricing vary widely. I did not verify outside prices for this guide. Catch: walk away from anyone guaranteeing AI mentions. |
| Kansas City SEO Services, Growth plan | $5,000 a month, 6-month minimum. Local and GBP work for up to 5 locations, AI-visibility tracking, monthly report and call. Catch: real budget, and no placement promised. |
For hired help, there is also a one-time onboarding audit of $5,000 to $10,000, waived on 12-month terms. For what drives local SEO pricing in general, see local SEO cost.
How we compared the options
| Criterion (weight) | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Control over accuracy (30%) | How directly the option fixes the facts assistants read about you |
| Cash cost (25%) | Out-of-pocket spend; lower spend scores higher |
| Owner time needed (20%) | Hours you personally spend; fewer hours scores higher |
| Fit for competitive or multi-location (15%) | Whether it holds up across many listings or a crowded category |
| Measurement (10%) | Whether you get a repeatable record of what assistants say |
Disclosure: Kansas City SEO Services sells one of these options, the Growth plan at $5,000 a month. There are no affiliate links in this guide. I did not list outside prices; none were verified as of November 2, 2026. Each option below gets my 0 to 10 rating per criterion, and the score is the weighted sum of those ratings. The ratings are judgments, not measurements.
Free test, then DIY: Best for single-location owners who want to know the problem before spending. Ratings: control 7, cost 10, time 4, fit 4, measurement 8. Score: 6.8/10 (my judgment). Trade-off: you still do the work.
Kansas City SEO Services, Growth: Best for multi-location or crowded categories where time matters more than cash. Ratings: control 8, cost 1, time 8, fit 9, measurement 8. Score: 6.4/10 (my judgment). Trade-off: lowest score on cost, and one business per category per map area.
DIY with this guide: Best for owners with spare hours and one location. Ratings: control 7, cost 10, time 3, fit 4, measurement 5. Score: 6.3/10 (my judgment). Trade-off: no outside check on what you missed.
General SEO or AI visibility agency: Best when you already trust a provider and they show their method in writing. Ratings: control 7, cost 3, time 8, fit 7, measurement 5. Score: 6.0/10 (my judgment). Trade-off: scope and honesty vary a lot.
Which option fits you
| If you are ... | Start with / watch out for |
|---|---|
| A single-location contractor with good reviews who is never named | Steps 2 and 4. Watch for a blocked robots.txt or a Bing listing you never claimed. |
| A new business with few reviews | Step 3 and steady review requests. Watch for review shortcuts the FTC bans. |
| A clinic or law firm | Accurate provider and practice-area pages. Watch for assistants repeating old staff, hours or services. |
| A multi-location brand | One master record per location. Watch for duplicate or merged listings between locations. |
| Three-plus months into DIY with no change | The free test, then compare plans. Watch for anyone guaranteeing AI mentions. |
Who this is not for
Online-only stores. Product recommendations work differently from local service answers, and this guide is built around listings and service areas. Look for guidance on product data and merchant feeds instead.
Anyone who needs a guaranteed result by a date. No one controls what an assistant says. If you need visibility next week, paid search ads are the closer fit, though you pay per click and they are a separate channel.
Businesses whose Google listing is suspended or missing. Fix that first. My guide on why your business is not showing up on Google is the better starting point.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business ranked on ChatGPT?
There is no fixed ranking to climb. ChatGPT builds each answer from what its search finds at that moment, so you improve your odds by letting its crawler in, matching your listings and earning real reviews. Nothing guarantees a mention.
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Not for a spot inside the answer, based on the OpenAI documentation I checked. Google says the same for local results: there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Be skeptical of anyone selling a guaranteed placement.
Is there a way to list or submit my business to ChatGPT?
Not that OpenAI documents. The closest thing is making sure OAI-SearchBot can reach your site and that your listings, especially Google and Bing, are complete and consistent.
Does my Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT?
It clearly matters for Google AI Overviews, and OpenAI does not say whether ChatGPT uses it. Google tells owners to keep Business Profile information up to date for its AI features. Keeping it accurate costs little and protects your basic facts either way.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Crawler fixes can register in about 24 hours on OpenAI's side. Google recrawls can take several days to several months, and reviews and mentions build over months. Judge progress over three or more months of logged tests.
Can I use ChatGPT to promote my business?
Yes, you can use it to draft service pages, review requests and FAQs, then edit them for accuracy. Drafting with it does not change what it tells other people. That depends on what it finds on the web.
Do I need an llms.txt file to get recommended by AI?
No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in its AI features. Crawler access, accurate listings and clear pages come first.

Your next step
Start with the prompt test and step 2. Those two take about an hour and catch the most common problems. If you want a second pair of eyes, the free AI Recommendation Test shows who ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode name for your category. When you are ready for hired help, compare plans on pricing and read how to choose a local SEO company in Kansas City. I work on the inputs: listings, pages and crawler access. I cannot promise any assistant will name you, and no one honest can.
Think of the onboarding audit as the starting point that surfaces what is wrong on the listing. The monthly Growth plan is the part that keeps replies, posts, and photos current once it is fixed. If your business does $1.5M to $20M a year, that is the range we built this for.
